Coupled with an aging workforce and a high demand for engineers and Quality Assurance\/Quality Control (QA\/QC) specialists, this situation forces Poland to engage in a global competition for talent. For this reason, among others, the <strong>Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum<\/strong> will host discussions regarding strategies for educating new generations of experts and implementing a nuclear safety culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland is on the verge of a historic energy shift, with nuclear power serving as its primary pillar. Executing these ambitious plans\u2014which include building the first large-scale power plant at the <strong>Lubiatowo-Kopalino<\/strong> site and developing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)\u2014requires thousands of specialists in addition to technology. The latest World Energy Employment 2025 report indicates a global renaissance in the nuclear sector, meaning Poland must compete for talent in an exceptionally challenging global labor market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Global landscape: the nuclear sector in a growth phase<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> According to the IEA report, employment in the global nuclear industry increased by 6% in 2024, reaching nearly 1.2 million employees. Investments in the sector have surged by 50% over the past five years, creating a significant demand for new staff. This industry remains one of the most financially attractive for workers. Alongside the oil and gas sectors, nuclear energy offers the <strong>highest wages in the entire energy industry<\/strong>, and 2025 saw one of the strongest increases in real wages, averaging 3.2%. Nevertheless, 46% of nuclear firms report difficulties in recruitment, which leads to project delays and rising costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who does the atom need?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Energy Employment 2025 report identifies specific personnel &#8222;bottlenecks&#8221;. The most sought-after specialists are <strong>engineers<\/strong>, particularly nuclear, electrical, and chemical engineers, who represent the primary source of labor shortages. There is also a need for design managers to oversee complex construction and certification processes. Furthermore, the market requires skilled technical workers such as welders, pipefitters, and high-voltage electricians, as well as experts in quality assurance and control (QA\/QC), whose roles are far more restrictive in the nuclear sector than in conventional energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A generational challenge: aging personnel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A global issue affecting Poland\u2019s plans is the age structure of the workforce. The nuclear industry has one of the oldest workforces, with <strong>25% of employees being over the age of 55<\/strong>. In developed economies, there are 1.7 workers approaching retirement for every young worker entering the field. This implies that Poland must not only train new specialists but do so more rapidly than other nations to replace retiring experts and ensure the transfer of their knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building national competencies is crucial in the face of these challenges. As emphasized by Dr. hab. in\u017c. Miko\u0142aj Oettingen, a professor at AGH University and member of the Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum Program Council, having competent human resources is a prerequisite for the safe implementation of nuclear energy in Poland. According to Oettingen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8222;Educating personnel for nuclear energy is a long-term process based on academic education and the practical development of skills necessary for a given position. Currently, a professional personnel training system is being created in Poland based on <strong>three main pillars<\/strong>: the development of educational programs, internship and apprenticeship programs in companies within the nuclear energy supply chain, and access to unique educational and training infrastructure in cooperation with foreign partners. Competencies are built based on cooperation between universities, nuclear industry enterprises, and government administration, leading to the creation of a unique education and training system. Challenges in the area of personnel development include the small number of native specialists specializing in nuclear energy education and the lack of advanced training infrastructure in Poland.
