Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (ÚJD SR)


  • Dr. Marta Žiaková has served as Chairperson of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic (ÚJD SR) since 2002. With decades of professional experience in the nuclear field, she is widely regarded as an internationally respected expert, combining deep technical knowledge with extensive high-level international engagement.
  • She earned a PhD in Technical Cybernetics from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, where she had previously completed her MSc in Technical Cybernetics – Automatic Technology at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Her academic background laid the foundation for a career that bridges advanced engineering, nuclear safety, and regulatory leadership.
  • Dr. Žiaková has played an active role in numerous expert missions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), contributing to international peer reviews and safety initiatives. She represented Slovakia as Governor to the IAEA Board of Governors during two terms (2004–2006 and 2013–2015) and went on to serve as Chair of the Board in 2014–2015. In 2018, she presided over the 62nd IAEA General Conference, one of the agency’s most significant annual gatherings.
  • Her leadership has also extended beyond the IAEA framework. In 2015, she chaired the Steering Committee on Nuclear Energy of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA), helping guide policy dialogue among leading nuclear nations. From March 2019 to December 2023, she served as Chairperson of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG), where she played a key role in strengthening nuclear safety cooperation and regulatory coordination across the European Union.
  • Throughout her career, Dr. Žiaková has been recognized for her commitment to nuclear safety, international collaboration, and the advancement of robust, transparent regulatory practices worldwide.
