Workshop: Green Radiology Facility: How to implement more sustainable practices in diagnostic imaging facilities?

According to recent studies, radiology facilities emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases and consume a significant percentage of the energy used by healthcare units. It is possible to reduce the carbon footprint of diagnostic imaging facilities without compromising the quality of patient care and patient safety. In order to implement more sustainable practices in radiology, a number of actions need to be consciously planned from reducing unnecessary imaging through simple measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce waste. Another important issue (also in the context of KPO) is the judicious replacement of old equipment with new equipment, not only with better energy performance, but also enabling, for example, shorter examination and downtime between patients, or the administration of a lower volume of contrast agents, thus reducing the carbon footprint of radiology services.

A first step could be to reduce the energy consumption of scanners and other equipment when not in use. Switching off 29 computers and 25 consoles overnight can reduce CO₂ emissions by 51 tonnes per year, while a single computed tomography (CT) scanner can save 14,000 kWh of energy. The clinical application of artificial intelligence in radiology can reduce examination and waiting times by prioritising the most urgent examinations and supporting the outcome, as well as reducing the number of subsequent diagnostic tests.

Workshop: Local Information Committees/Local Safety Committees: good European practices (creation, operation, effects)

During the workshop, participants will learn case studies of the formation and operation of Local Information/Safety Committees. Methods and procedures for reporting incidents and monitoring the local community’s knowledge of nuclear safety will be presented.

Workshop: your voice in Brussels – prepare a strategy to support your interests

Brussels is where most of the regulations related to climate and energy policy are made, ultimately affecting local governments or the conduct of business. Not surprisingly, it is the European decision-making centers that lobbying organizations are focusing on. Participants will prepare their strategies for Brussels to strengthen their position and create new opportunities to influence key political and budgetary decisions for their business. They will receive concrete tips on how to reach out and build contacts in key European institutions. They will learn what forms of advocacy on the nuclear project in Poland can be most effective.

Workshop: Environmental impact of a nuclear power plant. Engineering methods to minimise negative impacts and utilise the potential of the power plant in an environmentally beneficial way.

For many decades, economic benefits have been the main driver of global technological development, putting environmental aspects somewhat to one side. The consequences of such policies can now be seen in climate change and environmental devastation around the world. This is why there is now an environmental policy that, among other things, seeks to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and increase the share of renewable energy and low-carbon nuclear energy in industry.

This workshop focuses on providing an insight into the environmental impact of a nuclear power plant and is aimed at both the general public and those working on nuclear projects.

The aim of this workshop is to:

present the potential interfaces of a nuclear power plant with the environment,
describe technical solutions for eliminating the negative impact of ongoing processes, taking into account the differences between a nuclear and a conventional power plant,
analysing possible ways to use the potential of a nuclear power plant for positive environmental impact and sustainable development.

The workshop will provide information from the point of view of an expert engineer specialising in the construction of nuclear reactors in Europe.

Workshop: Radiological protection in practice

Workshop dedicated to those interested in deepening their knowledge of ionizing radiation and its impact on the environment and health. Participants will learn the basic properties of radiation, the mechanisms of its interaction with matter, and the principles of monitoring and minimizing exposure. The program includes practical exercises such as the construction of a Geiger-Muller counter, analysis of real cases, and discussions of applications of radiation protection in various fields of science and industry. This is an excellent opportunity to understand the essence of radiological protection and gain practical skills in this field.

Workshop: Nuclear Scaling Initiative – building a new nuclear ecosystem

The Nuclear Scaling Initiative (NSI) is a collaborative effort of Clean Air Task Force, the EFI Foundation, and the Nuclear Threat Initiative to build a new nuclear energy ecosystem that can quickly and economically scale to 50+ gigawatts of safe and secure nuclear energy globally per year by the 2030s. NSI’s plan for revolutionizing how nuclear energy is designed, financed, built, and regulated will advance climate goals, spark economic development, expand energy access, and ensure that nuclear technology is used for only peaceful purposes.

This workshop will focus on the concepts and strategy behind NSI, bringing together Baltic nuclear stakeholders to develop practical recommendations for coordinated action at the CEE level. This convening will enable a pragmatic approach to build new nuclear energy in the region.

The workshop is aimed at representatives of companies interested in working with the nuclear power sector, as well as those who want to improve their competence in meeting quality and safety requirements in this industry.

Workshop objective:

• To familiarise participants with the requirements and standards applicable to the nuclear power industry.
• To equip participants with the practical tools and knowledge needed to operate effectively as a subcontractor.
• To emphasise the importance of a quality and safety culture in the context of long-term success in the sector.
