WORKSHOP BNEF 2: From Legacy Waste to Final Disposal: Practical Lessons from Lithuania’s Radioactive Waste Management Programme

Free workshop. Registration required. REGISTER

Language: English

Experts:
Dmitrij Jekateriničev
Gintautas Klevinskas
Jonas Kimontas

TOPICS

This two‑hour workshop will provide a practical, experience-based overview of Lithuania’s radioactive waste management programme implemented at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) by ALTRA. Participants will gain insights into the entire waste management chain — from sorting and characterization to treatment, conditioning, interim storage, and final disposal.
The workshop will highlight real project experience, including the development of the very low level radioactive waste landfill repository and the near-surface repository for short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive waste, ensuring safe disposal in line with international safety standards.

FOR WHO

This session will be particularly valuable for future operators, regulatory authorities, waste management organizations, and technology developers seeking proven and optimized approaches to safe, efficient, and compliant long-term waste management. Our experts will share key lessons learned from implementing complex decommissioning-related waste management tasks and preparing the necessary infrastructure.

BNEF ROUNDTABLE: Information and Education Centres in Nuclear Power Plant Regions

Host: University of Gdańsk Sustainable Development Centre in cooperation with Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe Sp. z o.o.

The Challenge

Poland is beginning the process of constructing its first nuclear power plant. One of the accompanying initiatives will be the design of a modern information and education centre to support communication about the nuclear energy programme. This is a high-risk communication area: the message can easily be oversimplified into public relations, or — conversely — dominated by excessive technical detail that makes it difficult for non-expert audiences to understand.

Across Europe, various models of such centres are in operation: from traditional visitor centres located at operating nuclear power plants, through city-based centres, to hybrid solutions combining exhibitions, school programmes, stakeholder dialogue elements, and digital communication tools.

During the roundtable, experts involved in running such centres at European nuclear power plants will discuss proven educational tools and methods for presenting reliable information. The discussion will also identify solutions that work well in practice, as well as those that do not deliver the expected results.

This is a closed event (not open to the public).

A summary will be available in the post-conference BNEF Insight publication.

BNEF WORKSHOP 3: Building competences in nuclear materials – requirements and practical experiences

Free workshop. Registration required REGISTER

Workshop only in English

TOPICS

The importance of materials is highlighted in all life span phases of a nuclear facility. All stakeholders: the regulator, licensee and supply chain companies, must have the people who clearly understand the requirements and how they will be met. Competence development is needed at the beginning of an investment project, and it must be continued all along. In addition to addressing all relevant technical topics, one must keep in mind organizational aspects and take care of safety culture. Building on Finnish and Polish experience, this workshop will deliver an overview on competence building related to materials in nuclear power plants.

The workshop will present lessons learned and best practices, discuss the related aspects in the Polish nuclear programme, and elaborate potential ways forward in collaboration.

WHERE

The workshop will take place on 18 March 2026 at the AmberExpo Exhibition and Conference Centre, 11 Żaglowa Street, Gdańsk, during Power Connect (the conference area is located on the 2nd floor; access will be signposted).

BNEF ROUNDTABLE: Nuclear reactors for heating

Host: Nuclear Energy Center, Gdańsk University of Technology

The challenge:

Heat producers for district heating systems in Poland must transform their infrastructure to meet regulatory requirements for energy efficiency and reduction of industrial and greenhouse gas emissions. There are many solutions that meet these requirements, each with its own limitations.

Nuclear reactors can be an important part of the national heat generation structure. The use of heat from nuclear reactors in district heating is not only a technical challenge, but also a financial, regulatory, and social one. The idea behind the round table is to identify significant barriers to the development/implementation of nuclear reactors in the heating sector and to develop proposals for action.

Event closed to the public.

A report will be available in the BNEF Insight post-conference publication.
