Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe

The company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe is responsible for tasks aimed at ensuring Poland’s energy security. The company is in charge of:

  • Preparing the investment process and acting as the investor in the project for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. It will also be responsible for the construction of additional reactors with a total installed capacity of approximately 6 GWe to 9 GWe, based on proven, large-scale, Generation III(+) pressurized water nuclear reactors, as well as their potential operation.
  • Supporting the government administration in efforts to achieve the goals of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program.
  • Building public support for the development of nuclear energy.

The sole owner of Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe is the State Treasury. According to a 2021 regulation by the Council of Ministers, the company is overseen by the Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure.

The development of the nuclear energy program is one of the key pillars of Poland’s energy transition. This program is outlined in two key government documents on the country’s energy strategy:

  1. The Polish Nuclear Energy Program, whose current version was adopted by the Council of Ministers on October 2, 2020. This document serves as a “roadmap” for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant.
  2. Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040, approved by the Council of Ministers in 2021, which defines the main objectives of the country’s energy transition.
